Controller salary in Sweden: what drives the pay level

Controller is a title that covers everything from the monthly close to running the budget process across a group. In Sweden, as elsewhere, pay follows responsibility, which makes the title a poor starting point when you set the salary for a new hire.

In short

  • Start from the role, not the title. Financial, business and group controllers sit at different pay levels.
  • Ownership of budgets, reporting to management and IFRS experience push the salary up.
  • Compare the median in several sources and agree the salary range before you interview.

The title says less than the role

Before you compare against salary statistics, decide which kind of controller you are hiring. Three roles dominate the Swedish market, and they are paid differently:

  • Financial controller: owns the close, reporting and making sure the numbers are right. Works close to accounting.
  • Business controller: works with the business, analyses profitability and acts as a sounding board for managers outside finance.
  • Group controller: consolidates several entities, often with international reporting and multiple currencies.

A business controller in a small company and a group controller in a listed group share a title on LinkedIn but have very different market value.

What pushes a controller's salary up

  • Ownership of budgets and forecasts, not just follow-up.
  • Reporting to management, the board or owners.
  • Experience of IFRS or group consolidation.
  • Skills in the ERP and BI tools you already use.
  • Working in English or several languages with foreign entities in the group.
  • Location: salaries in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö are generally higher.

Where to find current salary statistics

Use several sources and compare the median salary, not the average. A few very high salaries pull the average up.

  • Statistics Sweden (SCB), which publishes salaries by occupation, sector and region.
  • Trade union salary statistics, for example from Civilekonomerna and Unionen, which often break pay down by experience and responsibility.
  • Salary reports from recruitment firms, which reflect what candidates actually accept right now.

Look at the whole offer

Candidates rarely compare only the monthly salary. Occupational pension, variable pay, the option to work remotely and how much overtime comes with the year-end close all weigh heavily, especially with controllers who are not actively looking.

Agree the salary range before you start interviewing. A range that management has signed off lets you make an offer the same week you find the right person, and that is often where hires are won or lost.
